The Buffalo Gals are fast becoming the country's favourite old-time country string band. Firmly rooted in traditional American music, with an authentic sound driven by fiddle, banjo, percussive step dance, and soaring harmonies, they produce an irresistible show packed with all the excitement, passion and fun of Appalachian, Bluegrass, Blues and Cajun tunes and songs.

Buffalo Gals performs Old-time country music from the Southern Appalachian region of the United States, and specialises in using music, song and dance to convey the spirit, excitement and passion of American roots music. The group was born out of the Old-Time Country Roots Revue project which performed for Frome ECOS festival and the Gables Theatre American Music Festival. They are a group of professional performers with a wide range of talents and interests, all of whom share a passion for the traditional music of the USA, and bring to their performance their many years of experience and enthusiasm for the genre. They presently perform at a variety of Folk and Bluegrass festivals, arts centres, acoustic music and folk clubs, and dances.

Traditionally we have had a street fair in Evershot. However we felt it was time to try something new . Last year we decided that as we are in such a wonderful part of Dorset with an enormous variety of great food producers, we would have a food hall. We invited about 35 local food producers from an area of only ten miles from our village. This was so successful largely due to the standard of people who came to show what they do,

We have now decided to widen the theme of great Dorset skilled people to include rural crafts. We have found over 20 people willing to come and Bang the Drum for Dorset we have so far

These people are coming to demonstrate their skills or show the results of their skills. It really is about letting the world know how lucky we are having such a huge diversity of skilled people on our doorstep. There will obviously be some of the usual Village type stalls. Plus some static steam engines and the amazing food hall.

The setting will be in the grounds of the old Estate office buildings, now home to one of our generous village residents. It will now also take in the village cricket ground. The Event will hopefully raise money for the Village and will be split between the Church, Village Hall, Play group, The Village fund and the School.

We will also have a local band playing for us in the evening. 'Ship of Fools' is an exciting 9 piece contemporary folk band offering a varied and versatile set to suit all tastes.

"Seriously, that gig last night is now in my top 5, and that top five includes Billy Bragg, the Birthday Party and Polly Harvey in Bridport last year. Which means you pushed The Jam in 1979 to number 6. It was a completely joyous night, and you are a completely joyous band."

He is a virtuoso guitarist and a master of numerous traditional instruments, having taken up the guitar age 14 in the middle of the civil war to express his wish to live a normal life. His music is pure, original blues: his songs are a cry for life, full of pain and hope at the same time; a mirror of life today in Burundi. Steven and his band fuse modern with traditional instruments in this wonderfully exuberant live show. His song 'Est Beau Mon Pays', a hymn to the beauty and vast human wealth of his ravaged country was a huge pan-African hit. His live shows are an unforgettable feast of emotion, colour, dance and glorious harmonies.

Ro:toro play traditional Estonian melodies, with a piper, an improvising saxophonist, an electric guitarist and a quirky percussionist who uses plastic bowls on a bed of water, bicycle wheels and scraps of tin foil to create his rhythms.

The group has its origins in Viljandi Cultural Academy of the University of Tartu, and they regularly perform at folk festivals both in Estonia and abroad.

They work with traditional bagpipe tunes, original compositions and have been collecting the songs of Khant (speakers of the Finno-Ugric language Khanty, from remote parts of Russia), all to be included in their concerts as well as a flat foot waltz, and lots of polkas to dance to!

Following the release of Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou’s self-titled debut album on Loose Music, the pair will be eschewing the conventional live music circuit in favour of an enchanting tour of village halls, bringing along for company a handpicked selection of the best players from their famous London folk club, The Lantern Society.

Their back to basics jaunt around the southern counties embraces a more rustic approach, advertising via the local post offices, pubs and village notice boards.

‘The village hall, pub, post office and shop are the cornerstones of the community, in fact that’s all there is in our village. Our country is blessed with a plethora of beautiful and too often underused village halls, designed and purpose built for close knit communities to gather in and perform to one another.’

Establishing their thriving folk club ‘The Lantern Society’ in 2008 and just completing the maiden year of broadcasting ‘The Lantern Society Radio Hour’ a bimonthly online radio show to great success, Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou have become pivotal figures on the London folk and roots scene. Proof of this coming when The Camden Crawl, the capital’s biggest music festival headhunted the pair to sit alongside the industry’s elite on the festival committee for 2010.

The Lantern Society Radio Hour will be producing and broadcasting a very special ‘Can’t Wait For The Spring Tour’ edition, capturing live the essence of the journey and continuing the modern field recording odyssey that is The Lantern Society Radio Hour.

Plans are being made for a northern counties leg of the tour later in the year, followed by Scottish, Welsh and Irish legs.The album ‘Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou’ is released on 15th February 2010 on Loose Music.

Hot Fingers welcome you to an eclectic mix of vintage acoustic string music. On this journey they visit the hot jazz of 1920's New York and sophisticated 1930's Swing, including references to the king of gypsy swing, Django Reinhardt. This is mixed with vocals of song-writing greats such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as novelty features from the likes of Cliff 'Ukulele Ike' Edwards. Tom 'Spats' Langham has crooned his way around the world with bands such as the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and has several times sold out venues on the Artsreach circuit. Although just a trio, the band can be seen removing three guitars, a double bass, a sousaphone, a banjo, a mandolin, two ukuleles, a clarinet, a tuba, and a pair of castanets from the band van. Three have already been taken and several in the pipeline, so don't be too 'shy' in coming forward!

Other stall holders are welcome to apply, but I'm afraid all the plant stall places are taken, but we can offer plenty of opportunities for other interests.

The Acorn Inn will be hosting a live band and a hog-roast alongside all-day pub opening, to be followed in the evening by another live band and further hog-roasting.

Diamond sound rocksteady ska and roots reggae.

Those charming purveyers of old skool Ska and Rocksteady Boy Le Monti are up to their usual brassy/dancey stuff, returning to Evershot village hall on Saturday 28th March.For this gig they are excited to be joined by the legendary Rico Rodriguez MBE on Trombone. Rico is one of the originals of Jamaican music. He was a pupil in the 1940's at the Alpha Boys School, alongside many other future star names of Ska & Reggae. Rico was taught trombone by fellow pupil Don Drummond and was soon playing on early Ska recordings in Kingston. He came to live in England in the early 60's along with Prince Buster and others, bringing the sounds of the Carribean with them.

In the 70s and 80s he was a member of the Specials and The Selector playing seminal horn licks on hits including Message to you Rudi and Ghost Town Awarded the MBE in 2007 for "services to music" with a recording career spaning 50 years, he's still playing with the likes of Jools Holland & Jerry Dammers.

Rico's enthusiastic reaction to Boy le Monti's debut album last year ..."you're playing MY music", has led to him visiting a hidden corner of North Dorset to play with the band. The gig at Evershot promises to be a cracker!

One of the most striking figures in jazz, the dreadlocked African garbed Babatunde Lea, hits Bridport with his Afro-Latin quartet to play their thrilling, tight and melodic jazz. San Francisco based Babatunde has worked with world famous artists such as Van Morrison, Stan Getz, Pharoah Sanders, Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead) Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Hilton Ruiz and Leon Thomas (Santana) in his four decades in jazz.

Club Underground booked Babatunde Lea after seeing his scorching set at the Pizza Express jazz venue in Soho. The quartet are playing a Ronnie Scott’s residency in early October 2008 featuring BBC Jazz Awards “Best Instrumentalist” Tony Kofi.

Tony Kofi‘Best Instrumentalist’ 2008

BBC Jazz Awards. New album; ‘The Silent Truth’.

Born in Nottingham of West African parents, Tony started his jazz education in Leicester and went on to study at Berklee. Experience in the Jazz Warriors in the 1980s led on to work with many of leading American musicians (including Branford Marsalis, Billy Higgins and Eddie Henderson, Andrew Hill and Sam Rivers) as well work in Gary Crosby’s Nu-Troop, Julian Joseph’s Big Band, Tim Richard’s Great Spirit, Byron Wallen’s Indigo and many others. His most recent CDs (All Is Know, dedicated to Monk, and Future Passed) have received widespread praise.

Trevor Watkis

Trevor Watkis started off playing the guitar at 10 years old before later switching to the piano. At 21 years old he was awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusetts, USA, where, being so close New York City, he was able to study with, hear and meet some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians, such as Mulgrew Miller, Betty Carter, Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard.

Trevor has since established himself on the UK jazz scene as a highly respected pianist, band leader and composer, working with renowned artists from both the UK and USA (Courtney Pine, Jean Toussaint, Cleveland Watkiss, Ernest Ranglin, Gary Bartz, Kenny Garrett, the late Stanley Turrentine, Eddie Henderson, Betty Carter, Clifford Jarvis and many others).

Since studying at the Goldsmith College from 1988 - 91 with Howard Riley and Laurence Couty, Larry has become one of the most sought after bass players on the London jazz scene.

British based bands and musicians thathe worked with include Courtney Pine, Jean Toussaint, Denys Baptiste, Cleveland Watkiss, Byron Wallen, Steve Williamson, Julian Joseph, Andy Sheppard, Soweto Kinch, Juliet Roberts, Alex Wilson and Robert Mitchell.

He has also toured with visiting musicians such as Stanley Turrentine and Steve Grossman, and performed with dancer Sharon Wrey's at the Royal Opera House. Larry's playing is featured on many recordings by some of London's best-known jazz players.

THE SIDEKICKS are hoping to encourage anyone who loves a good band, and hates a plastic Halloween night, to get themselves up to Evershot Hall on Saturday the 27th October. Playing together as a 5 piece since 2001, the bands full-on sets have earned them a well-deserved reputation as a live act. Having a choice of 200+ songs, sets can include anything from Ian Dury to Toots and the Maytals, via Johnny Cash, or the Kinks to Stevie Wonder and the Who.

Always versions, never copies. SG ‘We’re not too hung up on trying to sound like the records, we stick close to the plot, but we want to make the music come alive, so if we lose it occasionally that’s us finding what we’re looking for… if you know what I mean.’

As a tribute to the enormously talented pianist, the late Ian Stewart (Stu), the legendary Rocket 88 have got back together this year following a request from Stu's home town of Pittenweem in Fife to appear at a special 25th Anniversary Festival to commemorate Stu's life.

Stu died at the age of 47 in december 1985. He was a founder member of the Rolling Stones and can be heard with his distinctive boogie woogie style on many early Stones recordings. It was Charlie Watts and Stu's shared love of big band boogie, blues and jazz which prompted the formation of Rocket 88. This eight piece band, four horns and four rhythm, worked extensively during the 80's and into the 90's appearing at many festivals, clubs and on radio and tv, representing Britain at the Montreux Festival.

On the piano the band now has the well known blues artist Ben Waters who was a friend of and greatly inspired by Stu at the start of his career. In addition to Ben the line-up is:-

John Picard & Mike hugh, Trombones
Roger Smith, Bass/ vocals
Jimmy Roche, Guitar
Sam Kelly, Drums (replacing Charlie Watts)

Peter Hossell lead singer with Something Blue has been singing and living the blues life since the late 60's where he was performing with Screw at the famous free concert for Brian Jones in Hyde Park.

Several bands (Los Dobros, The Dirty Dogs) and 30 years later he woke up to discover that he was in Brazil and immediately set about forming a new band of innocent victims from Sao Paulo.

Supported by the Scuzzbuckets we are lucky to have Something Blue playing one of a few gigs on their first visit to this country.

ASTRONAUTS AND PARACHUTES WIN EVERSHOT BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Saturday 21st April Evershot saw the much anticipated return of Battle of the Bands! The six bands played to a packed hall. Our three professional music judges faced an impossible challenge as all the bands were well rehearsed and confident on stage and sounding brilliant thanks to our old friends Richard and Henry from MES sound.

MANTRA back this year with new front girl Sabrina who wowed us with 'Teenage Kicks' - always difficult to play first but the audience made up for it by turning up early and giving plenty of support.

ASTRONAUTS AND PARACHUTES the judges favorites captivated their audience with their well polished and professional set, who generously invited all the bands on stage to enjoy the winning moment.

THE FREE RADICALS played a high-energy set which got the crowd jumping.

TAKE IT AS RED looked like old pros, working the crowd, in true rock 'n' roll style and were very comfortable having played the hall before.

THE MAUVES had the looks and the attitude of any great indie band and certainly got the judges attention. Great to see another girl on stage.

SUCK MY BAND don't let the name fool you, this sophisticated theatrical art-house rock-outfit delivered one of the most original sets led by Liam's incredible gothic vocal talents. Would love to see their next gigs with eccentric costumes.

A great many thanks to Val Crabb, Andrew Dickson and Paul Lashmarfor their thorough and considered judging. And to all the band-on crew.

Come back soon and see more pictures of the event, and the new BATTLE of the BANDS shield which has pride of place in the Village Hall.

April, 21st, Saturday, Battle Of The Bands, 7.30pm. We already have some early entries for this years battle of the bands, Mantra, our youngest contestants last year, a local band from Beaminster

school , another year older and wiser, we look forward to their winning stage presence and wooing tunes. Also from Beaminster we have Suck my Band, lead singer Liam has a fantastic vocal range well suited to their tongue-in-cheek heavy rock style. Astronauts and Parachutes, this years winners of the Beaminster and Colfox School battle of the Bands, original and well produced music which is a joy to listen too. The Mauves this years runners up at the Beaminster/Colfox competition, very slick and retro, and nice to see a talented girl up there amongst the lads. Our final entryso far is our funky favourite Take it as Red they played excellently last year and Ed really knows how to strut his stuff and drive the audience wild! And last but not least, The Free Radicals!

CIDER RIDERS CRUSHED

Sunday 13 th August saw the 7th annual ‘Festival of Wakky Races' held at Evershot cricket pitch halfway between Yeovil and Dorchester. There was a fine turn out of teams this year with the reigning champions ‘The Cider Riders' having to fend off competition from 10 teams that came from surrounding local villages, Yeovil, Weymouth and even as far as Bognor Regis!

Wakky Races is a day where teams compete in a series of silly games that are a cross between ‘It's a knockout!' and ‘The Crystal Maze' all for the glory of winning the coveted ‘Evershot Wakky Races Trophy'.

With 6 people in a team there was plenty of action for over 200 onlookers to enjoy as the participants tackled a variety of different games that involved wheelbarrows, 6-person sets of skis, some interesting looking horses and lots of buckets of water.

The day was well supported by both villagers and local businesses who helped organise the games and provide the materials needed for the crazy props that make the day such an entertaining event.

With many different games and sideshows going on throughout the day for both adults and children and also a bar and BBQ to keep everyone going (with all proceeds going to village hall and pavilion projects), this was a day of good old fashioned village fun that is getting more and more difficult to find.

The well deserved winners of the event were the finely dressed ‘Stuporheroes' who turned out to be runaway victors and denied the claims from other teams that they had unfairly used their special powers to win!

The organisers wished to thank everyone that was involved in arranging the event and all that attended and made the day so much fun, and they hope to see you all again next time!

Thanks to everyone's support over £1,000 was raised for the Village Hall and Pavillion Projets.

Ok so its nearly that time again when we all run around like the headless chickens putting the finishing touches to this years new games so as the teams can run around like headless chickens.

As always there will be some new games and some old games, we couldn't think about Wakky races without putting the Larger louts on the list first. (see below)

Its a pretty safe bet that the teams who have played before haven't been practising this one for 12 months and if they have, they should be under lock and key in that nice room with the lovely padded wallpaper.

We have decided to go Skiing this year as well very upmarket for us, maybe next year a few polo ponies will appear on the scene!!! I'm sure this one will be as easy as falling off a log (or ski)

For the people who are planning to take part and have been saying all along that they will put a team in, beware there are only 10 places and 12 teams have said that they are going to play!!!!

5 teams have already paid their money securing a place, that leaves the other 7 looking at 5 places it will be first come first served and there is not long to go so hurry up and part with your cash.

The BAND-ON.co.uk crew take a well earned rest to enjoy this summer's festivals. Gigs at Evershot Village Hall will start up again in the autumn when the evenings begin to draw in.

It was a busy weekend with SNEEKY PETE and our special mystery guest who blew us away with his southern harmonica songs. There was a good attendance considering nearly every town and village in Dorset had a live band playing this weekend, including trawler race day in Weymouth.

The weather held out for the STREET FAIR on sunday, this year we moved the stage to outside the church powered by Meg's bedside power sockets. THE DAZE found out what it was like to play sober in daylight and were shocked how grubby their leads were. Richard and Henry turned up the volume for the full rock and roll stadium experience only to have the community police officers turn it back down again. Still, the Harley Davison crew seemed to enjoy them.

The EMERGENCY DJ's filled the gaps with their car-boot collections of dusty old vinyl records.

BOREDBRAND showcased their incredible virtual coconut shy this year and wowed the crowd with promises of potentially winning a speed boat.

BOY LE MONTI stole the show with their increasingly popular mixture of ska and rock steady covers.

It is always a challenge on STREET FAIR day to satisfy the diverse tastes of the crowd and stall holders in an acoustically challenging street.

WINNERS BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2006

THE DAZE WIN EVERSHOT BATTLE OF THE BANDS !

Evershot hosted it's first ever Battle of the Bands on Saturday the 22nd April 2006, the event was very well attended. The competition was open to the first eight bands who got their applications in before the deadline. All bands had to be Dorset based, un-signed and under 30. Band play order was pulled out of a hat [actually it was Karen's hands in the car park].

TAKE IT AS RED were unlucky to play first as the audience was a little thin at 8.00pm but they opened the show with a cracking set including a Jimi Hendrix cover, it was their first ever public performance and they were superb.

Each band were asked to play one cover and two of their own original compositions.

THRUSH were next, followed by PARIAH and then PALINGENESIS... all giving confident performances.

THRUSH kept us all in suspense with a few technical problems which PARIAH's drummer and guitarist gallantly helped them with [something about a pedal and a lead].

WILLY BORRELL was right when he told us PARIAH were going to set us on fire! Because they did with a NIRVANA cover and 'Run away from life' which helped them win the Beaminister school Battle of the Bands this year when they played as OBSEQUEY. The current line-up had been formed just five hours prior to performance.

PALINGENESIS frightened the young and the old with their fabulous make-up and their cover of 'You Spin Me' by 'Dead or Alive' was truly memorable. Zacharly, the gravely voiced singer lead the band with great stage presence.

MANTRA our youngest contestants proved to be very popular with their audience, wooing the crowd with a RADIOHEAD cover and enviable naturally curly hair. They did amazing well up against much older contestants with un-naturally coloured hair.

Resident DJ and VJ - NOT BOTHERED did quite well colour mixing stolen footage and projecting onto the stage until someone decided to accidently unplug his extension cable and crashed his impressive set-up. 3 MINUTE HEROS were the last minute heroes stepping into the lime light at short notice as two of the original applicants dropped out. They played a stunningly tight set despite the stage lights failing and the projector blowing up. Un-phased they played on in semi-darkness and then under the harsh reality lighting of a single 100watt light bulb. True professionals. Their RAZORLIGHT cover amused our compare WILLY BORRELL as his brother did the original. Thanks to John Grimshaw's heroics, a 8ft step ladder in the middle of the dance floor and a spot of rewiring the lights miraclously came back to life for their final song.

THE DAZE proved they had it what it took to win the peoples vote. The dance floor was heaving, the girls were screaming, the mums were crying and even the Dad's put their drinks down to clap a bit. THE DAZE were the undisputed winners of the First ever Evershot Battle of the Bands, with the fullest shoebox of votes.

THE DAZE will be playing at the Evershot Street fair on the May 28th.

BOY LE MONTI the vintage ska band wound it back and after two or three tracks our ear drums were nearly fully functional and the floorboards bounced until gone midnight with everybody dancing.

None of this would have been possible without the brilliant sound engineering skills of MES sound. Henry, Richard and Geoff all turned up at 3 in the afternoon and stayed to the bitter end. They took no stick from any of the bands and whipped the chaos into a slick and professional performance. Not once were we subjected screeching feedback, missing vocals or white noise. Brilliant.

Thanks to everyone front of house and behind the bar for making another BAND-ON event a huge success.

Evershot is hosting its very first Battle of the Bands. It will see nine acts from around the region competing for a trophy and a slot at the village's street fair in May.

Vintage ska act Boy Le Monti are headlining the event and MC for the evening is Willy Borrell, from MTV's Willy Borrell and the Commodore of Nice.

Band On, a group of promoters committed to bringing live music to the village, are organizing the contest.

All proceeds from the contest will go towards the upkeep of the village hall.

Battle of the Bands is open to any non-professional band with original material and whose members are all under 30 years old.

Competing bands include Poison Tree, Mantra, the Adam Tubb Band, the Daze, Thrush, Palingenesis, Pariah, Three Minute Heroes and Take it as Red.

They will be covering Teenage Angst by Placebo and playing their own tracks Sad Eyes Vacant Smile and Hey Peachy!

Band members are Ned Miles, 16, guitar and vocals, Ed Edge, 16, guitar, Rob Edge, bass, Mike Shaffeie, 16, drums

MANTRA

Mantra from Bridport, influences include Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, the Eagles and Radiohead.

They will be covering Street Spirit by Radiohead and playing their own tracks The Man who Can't be Named and Soul Searcher

Band members are Jamie, 12, drums, Finn, 12, guitar, Lewis, 12, guitar, Corbin, 12, bass

THE ADAM TUBB BAND

The Adam Tubb Band from Bridport, influences include Explosions in the Sky and Radiohead.

They will be covering Go To Sleep by Radiohead and playing their own tracks La Riviere and Little Lune.

Band members are Adam Tubb, 17, Aaron Hull Smith, 16, Calum Croft, 17 and Joe Poole 17

THE DAZE

The Daze from Charminster, influences include mod and rock.

They will be covering I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys and playing their own tracks Skin And Bone and Lies in Hand.

Band members are Lee Watts, 19, guitar, Thom Burdett, 19, bass, Alex Burt, 19, drums and Kerrin Hutchins, 19, lead guitar.

THRUSH

Thrush from Dorchester , influences include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dead Kennedys, The Ramones, Rage Against The Machine and The Doors.

They will be covering House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals (TBC) and playing their own tracks The Flying Nest and Her Velvet Wiget.

Band members are Edward, 19, guitar and vocals, Liam, 18, base and Paul, 20, drums and vocals.

PALINGENESIS

Palingenesis from Broadmead, influences include Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, Otep, Slipknot and Rob Zombie.

They will be covering You Spin Me Right Round by Dead or Alive and playing their own tracks Lucification and Darkness.

Band members are Zacharly, bass and vocals, James, drums and Bazil, guitar.

PARIAH

Pariah from Evershot and Bridport, influences include System of the Down, QOTSA, Nirvana and Muse.

They will be covering No one Knows by QOTSA and playing their own tracks TBC

Band members are Joseph Trudgeon, 15, drums, Will Pownall, 15, bass and vocals and Jake Sparks, 14, guitar and backing vocals.

THREE MINUTE HEROES

Three Minute Heroes from Dorchester , influences include The Jam, Paul Weller, The Selector, The Ordinary Boys, The Kinks and Razorlight.

They will be covering Stumble and Fall by Razorlight and playing their own tracks Live Without It and Fifteen Minutes.

Band members are Sam Travis, 16, vocals, Adam Hutchings, 16, vocals and bass, Kyle Mollisan, 16, guitar, Tom Howe, 16, guitar and Charli Meland, 16, drums.

TAKE IT AS RED (First reserve band)

Take it as Red from Bridport and Beaminster, influences include classical, electropop and Norwegian death metal.

They will be playing their own tracks Fall of Communism and Dance Girl Dance.

Band members are Ed Eckersall, 18, bass and Jason Beavis, 18, guitar and synth.
